Large Kauri Kereru Urns
Elegance personified
This Kereru cremation urn is handcrafted from the giant Kauri tree.
The Kauri is the most famous of New Zealand Native trees and one of the largest trees found anywhere in the world. First discovered in 1772 this magnificent tree is grown only in NZ. The largest Kauri on record known as "The Father of the Forest" grew at Mill Creek Mercury Bay, its height was 21.8m to the first branch with a girth of 23.43 metres, approximately 4000 years old.
Kauri timber is light and very durable straight grained free from knots and other defects yellow brown in colour and easily worked.
History has recorded that it was used by the Maoris , the hull of their canoes made from single trees well known to reach 25 metres.
