This urn has been handcrafted from a mighty Oak tree. The oaks red and white
are the most abundant US hardwood species. It would be difficult to name one
with a longer and more illustrious history in furnishings and interior design.
It was a favourite of early English craftsmen and a prized material for
American colonists. White oak is just one of 86 species, native to this
country but it is the classic oak of America. Although prevalent throughout
the eastern half of the United States, from Maine to Texas, this lumber comes
chiefly from the South, South Atlantic and central states including the
Southern Appalachians. The white variety ranges from nearly white sapwood to a
darker grey brown heartwood, the grain is distinguished by rays which reflect
light and add to its attractiveness. Depending on the way the logs are sawn
many distinctive and sought after patterns emerge. It is heavy, very strong
and very hard, stiff, and durable under exposure and can be stained
beautifully with a wide range of finishes. The nameplate provided can be stuck
on the top of the urn or on the side.
